Kicking Plates

13 February 2023

A common sight in public and commercial buildings, kicking plates, or kick plates as they are often known, are very increasing being seen in a domestic setting, on both front doors and internal doors.

But what are the benefits of having them and should you be getting kicking plates for your own doors at home?

What is Kicking Plate?

A kicking plate is a sheet of material that attaches to the bottom of your door to protect it from damage.

People often kick open doors when they have their hands full causing the bottom of a door to scuff and wear. You’ll see them in high footfall areas such as schools, restaurants, and hospitals as it’s a cheaper alternative to replacing a door.

Door kick plates are generally made of metal, like stainless steel, aluminium, or brass, but can also be found in vinyl or plastic. Metal door kicking plates are stronger and more durable and come in a range of finishes such as beeswax and pewter

Why Use a Door Kick Plate?

The benefits of using kicking plates are clear, they protect your door from everyday damage, dirt, chips, and scuffs. They are easy to install, relatively inexpensive and can match the style of a door or room.

We are increasingly seeing kicking plates being used as a style statement in renovation projects, new builds, and HMO properties.

Designers are using kicking plates to not only add protection to the door, but also to add detailing to a door. Most doors are block colours, so you can accentuate a black door with a dark grey kick plate just to give it a stand out look, or add some colour and style to a white door.

Many are building up a theme with their door hardware,  matching a kicking plate to the door handle, escutcheon, letter box and door lock for a consistent look.

Commercial kicking plates that meet all current UK legislation are available direct from FR Scott and you can find a range of domestic door kicking plates to match your style at hardwareandhandles.co.uk
