How to Refresh Your Front Door with Hardware

8 March 2023

Are you wanting to give your front door a makeover?

You can transform your doors by refreshing your door hardware. Giving the front of your house a new look, often at a fraction of the price that a new door would cost.

Find out more below…

Why refresh your front door with hardware?

The front door is the main focal point of most peoples homes and is often the first point of entry. It is the first impression guests and visitors get from your property. As such the importance of its appearance can never be underestimated.

You will want to strike a balance between functional and decorative hardware. Hardware will need to ‘do the job’ and provide security along with matching with your personality whilst complimenting the rest of your property.

A refresh of your door hardware can truly change the appearance of the front of your home. For example, adding a door knocker is a great way to add character to a door.

Changing from the gleam of a chrome door handle to a matt black door handle is a simple way to add a modern edge to your front door giving it a cost effective makeover.

Refreshing your hardware can make you stand out from your neighbours. It can give you that ‘kerb appeal’. We have even had an instance of someone selling their home after giving their front door a makeover – following months of struggling to get offers.

There are quite a few factors to take into consideration when deciding what hardware to use and we will cover a few of them below…

What door hardware is available

When you are looking to refresh your front door, you will first need to decide what needs replacing and what doesn’t. Some existing items may still work absolutely fine, for example, the hinges and the existing locks. Though if you are looking to completely change the look and finish of your hardware then these may need replacing as well.

It’s not just about the handle! Below is a general list of front door fittings to consider when thinking about front door hardware.

What are the different types of door hardware

Door Hardware forms part of a larger category often referred to as Architectural Ironmongery.

All of the above mentioned items can be split into various types of hardware. What you need will differ greatly depending on the type of door you have – UPVC, Composite, Timber – along with the level of security you wish to have.

Our specialist team can advise on the best hardware for your needs.

Which hardware works best with which doors?

Choosing your hardware can often be a difficult choice and can depend on several factors.  The type and age of house will play a factor, as will the area you live in, the door colour along with your own personality and sense of style.

If your house was built in the Victorian or Georgian times, you would most likely look towards brass furniture for your door. More recently built properties may decide to go more on trend, with a modern design handle in Matt Black or Satin Brass. If you live in a cottage or a barn conversion, then you may look to a period black iron design.

You may even consider using current trends on older houses to offer a bridge between new & old.

Determining what finish to choose for your front door is sometimes a difficult one. Pretty much all the hardware mentioned is available in a wide range of finishes. From Satin Brass to Matt Bronze, Polished Brass to Polished Chrome. Right through to Matt Black and Pewter

What is a popular colour for door handles and hardware?

A Satin finish is a good choice for those that want low maintenance, basically it is durable and doesn’t easily smudge or show fingerprints.

Polished Chrome handles suit a more modern style. It’s a neutral tone that you can combine with nearly any door colour. It is a great option if you want to create uniformity throughout your home -from front door right through all your interior doors

Black hardware is on trend right now particularly due to its versatility. It can fit as part of the popular ‘industrial’ style or as part of a monochrome palette that offer a ‘minimalistic’ look.

Paired with a gloss white door matt black handles and hinges can be a relativity bold look.

Currently our best selling door handle is the Sorrento in Matt Black . It is available direct from our sales team or by visiting Hardware and Handles, our sister site for all our domestic ironmongery
